IMEI tracking

IMEI tracking for phone repair shops

The IMEI is the 15-digit number that identifies a phone. Putting it on every ticket is the cheapest way to end "that's not my phone" arguments and tie warranty returns to the right job.

At intake

Dial \*#06# in front of the customer and copy the full number to the ticket. Check that it's 15 digits long. On dual-SIM phones, record at least the first IMEI. For tablets without cellular, record the serial number instead.

When the phone won't power on

Check the SIM tray, the frame, or the box. If you can't read it, write "IMEI not readable at intake," describe the device and any marks, and add the IMEI once it powers on at the bench.

Where it pays off

  • At the bench: the technician matches the IMEI before opening the phone.
  • At pickup: confirm it again in front of the customer.
  • On comebacks: find the original ticket by IMEI, even without the claim stub. See handling repair comebacks.

RepairAmigo records the IMEI or serial on the ticket at intake. It's free, and records are stored on your shop's own machine. See what to ask customers at intake or download RepairAmigo.
