Tablet repair shop software is what a shop owner looks for when tablets stop being an occasional job and become a steady part of the bench: cracked glass on a kid's tablet, a swollen battery on a school iPad, a loose charging port on a Galaxy Tab. This page covers what that software should include, how tablet work differs from phone and computer work, and how a free self-hosted option runs on your own shop network.
It is written for the walk-in repair counter that already fixes phones and computers and wants tablets on the same system. For the check-in details on a single tablet ticket see tablet repair tickets; for the phone side see phone repair shop software, and for PCs and laptops see computer repair shop software.
What tablet repair shop software should include
A useful install for tablet repairs covers the whole job, not one slice:
- Intake tickets with tablet as its own device type: customer phone number, brand, model, serial number (or IMEI on cellular models), problem and condition on one record.
- Status and assigned tech so "is my tablet ready?" takes seconds to answer, even when the screen is still curing.
- Parts inventory that deducts tablet screens, batteries, charging ports and cameras when a repair is saved.
- Cash POS at pickup on the same ticket, with no retyping into a second register.
- Printed receipt with a barcode the customer can bring back.
- Owner, Manager and Technician roles with no ticket or user limits.
- Warranty link back to the original repair when a tablet comes back.
If the tool only stores contacts, it is CRM. If it only tracks jobs with no parts or cash, it is a ticket board. Prefer one repair shop management system that runs the whole counter, the same way electronics repair shop management software is described for shops that fix many kinds of devices.
How tablet repair differs from phone and computer pages
Tablets sit between phones and laptops. They use phone-style glass, batteries and charging ports, but at a larger size, with more adhesive and more model generations that look alike. A phone-only system that forces every device into a phone form loses details; a computer-only system that expects a service tag and a hard drive misses the screen and battery details that drive most tablet jobs.
Tablet repair shop software should treat tablets as their own device type on the same intake form as phones, laptops, desktops and consoles. That way one customer can drop off a phone and a tablet on the same visit, and both live under one customer record. The technician picks the device type, then the brand and model, and sees the problem list that fits tablets.
Tablets also arrive in a different way. Many are shared family devices or school devices, so the person at the counter may not know the passcode or the account. The software has to give the counter room to record who dropped it off, who can approve the quote and any account lock the customer must clear before pickup.
Intake and tickets for tablets
Good tablet repair shop software gives the counter a short form: customer phone number, device type, brand, model, serial number, problem list and condition notes. Add the exact model number from the back or the settings screen, the storage size and Wi-Fi only or cellular to the notes. Returning customers fill in from the phone number. The same record holds the diagnosis, the quote, the repair performed and the pickup sale.
Ask the same questions every time so nothing is missed at drop-off. A field-tested list is in what to ask customers at intake. Cracked glass, bent corners, dead pixels and any lift in the screen belong on the ticket before the tablet goes to the bench; documenting screen damage at intake shows how. On cellular models, write the IMEI on the ticket as well as the serial; recording the IMEI explains why it matters when a device comes back.
List every accessory left with the tablet: case, stylus, keyboard cover, cable. Or write "tablet only". Keep statuses short: received, diagnosing, waiting on customer, waiting on parts, repaired, picked up. A technician should be able to change a status from a phone browser at the bench without walking back to the front computer.
Parts inventory for tablet repairs
Tablet parts are expensive and rarely fit across generations, so stock has to be exact. Screens by model, quality and color, batteries, charging ports, cameras and speakers belong in one inventory with low-stock warnings the owner can trust. Saving the repair should deduct the part from stock and link it to the ticket.
A notebook that gets lost after a busy Saturday is not inventory. When a part leaves the shelf without a ticket, the count drifts. A practical weekly routine is in parts inventory tracking routine.
Swollen tablet batteries need care at the bench and a clear note on the ticket; a step-by-step approach is in battery replacement workflow. Loose or dirty ports are the other common tablet job; see charging port repair tickets for what to record before and after.
Cash POS at pickup
At pickup, the same ticket becomes the sale: diagnostic charge, labor, parts and tax if you collect it. That is POS for a repair counter, not a separate retail app. Walk-in accessory sales such as cases and screen protectors can share the cash drawer; repairs should never be retyped into a second system. More on counter sales in point of sale for phone repair shops.
Tablet screens often need extra time for the adhesive to set, so put the expected ready time on the ticket and tell the customer at drop-off. Practical wording is in quoting repair turnaround times. Each check-in should still print a receipt the customer can bring back; the barcode makes pickup one scan instead of a search. See phone repair receipt template for what belongs on it.
Roles (Owner, Manager, Technician) and limits
Owner, Manager and Technician roles keep prices, deletes and exports under control when more than one person works the counter. Technicians record the repair performed, a status and comments. Managers see the whole queue and keep jobs moving. Owners control users, settings and exports.
Watch for limits that grow with your shop. Some tools cap tickets per month, technicians per account or devices per location, and the cap shows up exactly when back-to-school season fills the bench with tablets. Tablet repair shop software for a growing counter should have no ticket or user limits, so adding a second technician does not change anything.
History must be searchable later by customer phone, ticket number, serial or IMEI. Warranty returns should open as tickets linked to the original job, so a tablet that comes back with a lifting screen does not start from a blank page. More in warranty repair tickets.
Self-hosted VM vs cloud subscription software
Cloud subscription tools keep your tickets on someone else's server and bill you every month. Free tablet repair shop software that runs in your shop keeps records on a computer you control. RepairAmigo is free and runs as a VirtualBox VM on a Windows, Linux or Intel Mac host; your team uses it from any browser on the shop network, on desktop, tablet or phone. Apple Silicon Macs are not supported as the host that runs the VM; they can still open the shop in a browser once the VM runs on a supported host.
No ports to open on the router for normal shop use. Remote support stays off until you click Allow. Optional one-way customer texts go through your own Twilio account if you want them. When you compare options, ask three questions: where does the data live, who controls the server, and can you take everything with you if you switch. More in self-hosted repair shop software and why a local Linux VM is safer.
Backups after you are running
Back up the entire VM and run it on another computer as easily as you installed it. That is also how you move shops or replace a host PC.
